I kneel, torso resting on the side of A’s toddler bed. My mouth finds his tiny ear. I whisper affirmations that, until recently I thought, only comforted me. Tonight, raspy, enthusiastic “YES’s!” punctuate each sentence I speak. I speak them as a prayer.
